Identifying Health Care Preferences

Beyond the broadly held understanding that "I don't want to be kept alive on machines with tubes going into me," many people do not know specifically what medical interventions are available and what they would want under specific circumstances.

Your Life, Your Choices is a free workbook that outlines the planning process that will determine a person's future medical choices. It is available here. We recommend that you go to the site and read or print the booklet. In the section entitled "Your health care preferences," there is an exercise that outlines a set of questions about choices in the event of a health crisis where you would not be able to articulate your wishes. You are encouraged to do the exercise yourself and give it to members of your community.
