Hospice Foundation of America E-Newsletter - September 2001

Hospice Foundation of America E-Newsletter
Volume 1, Issue 7
September 2001

------------------------------------------------------------
Message from David Abrams, President
------------------------------------------------------------

We at Hospice Foundation of America express our sympathy and concern to all whose lives have been touched by the terrible tragedies of September 11, and we send our gratitude to all who are working to bring comfort in the wake of such sorrow.

------------------------------------------------------------
"in the aftermath of tragic events, the outpouring of public grief not only reassures us that expressing our deepest feelings is appropriate, it may also assist us in expressing and coping with our personal griefs."

--From "This Battalion of Sorrows" by Ronald Sunderland

With the help of Kenneth J. Doka and William Lamers, we offer these resources from our literature, focusing on grief after sudden and traumatic loss. While the scope of this tragedy is overwhelming, we hope that these may offer support to you or someone you know, either personally or professionally.

"Facing Sudden Loss" by Judy Tatelbaum, MSW

"Helping a Child Deal with Death" by Nancy Boyd Webb

"Grieving" by Kenneth J. Doka

"The 3 V's of Good Friendship: Supporting Your Friend Through Illness and Loss"

You can find other resources on our Web site.

------------------------------------------------------------
HFA applauds the efforts of the numerous organizations who are helping in any way they can, including:

The National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization, which is offering free downloads of its brochures on grief.

TAPS (Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors), the only military resource on the newly formed National Coalition of Trauma Response Organizations.

------------------------------------------------------------
For professionals working with those facing traumatic loss, HFA recommends the book "Treatment of Complicated Mourning" by Therese A. Rando (Research Press, 1993).

------------------------------------------------------------
From Kenneth Doka, Senior Consultant:
Each person's reactions and responses to traumatic loss and grief are personal and individual. Actions such as displaying the flag or giving blood are expressions of care, mourning, and grief. The word "CARE" can serve as a guidepost:
Care
Assist
Respond
Express
