Hospice Foundation of America E-Newsletter - May 2002Hospice Foundation of America E-Newsletter ------------------------------------------------------------ Thank you to everyone who joined us for our 9th annual National Bereavement Teleconference in April! The program was seen in more than 2,000 communities by over 100,000 professionals, who shared an interest in learning more about aging and bereavement. We hope you plan to join us again next year when we will focus on "Living With Grief: Coping With Public Tragedy." HFA's annual teleconference is the largest distance-learning program for professionals in the country; we provide more than 27,000 hours of continuing education units each year. Many other exciting educational opportunities are taking place for professionals involved in end-of-life issues; we wanted to share a few of them with you. ------------------------------------------------------------ The National Alliance for Caregiving-along with AARP, Alzheimer's Association Greater New Jersey Chapter, Hospice Association of America, Interfaith Caregivers Alliance, National Association for Home Care, The National Council on the Aging, National Family Caregivers Association, and Towson University's Department of Gerontology-recently participated in a collaborative project led by Eisai Inc., a pharmaceutical company dedicated to improving the lives of patients and their families. Caring to Help Others: A Training Manual for Preparing Volunteers to Assist Caregivers of Older Adults, is available free of charge to qualified community organizations. The Tufts University School of Medicine is offering a Master of Science in Pain Research, Education and Policy degree. Excellent internationally-known clinicians and basic scientists provide instruction for this unique multidisciplinary program. The learning environment is enriched by the diversity of disciplines represented within the student body and faculty, which include physicians, nurses, dentists, physical therapists, and pharmacists. The Last Acts Workplace Committee has developed a comprehensive guide for all Human Resources Departments, for both large and small businesses. This user-friendly resource will help organizations develop a benefits program to meet the needs of employees who are dealing with end of life, caregiving, eldercare, and bereavement. [Note: This program has ended.] ------------------------------------------------------------ Hospice Foundation of America has released its report to the Florida Legislature documenting the findings from the Hospice Medicaid Education Project (HMEP). The HMEP was a pilot program of the 2000 Florida Legislature designed to educate Florida physicians who serve Medicaid patients facing terminal illness. With the goal of increasing the utilization of hospice among Medicaid patients with a life-limiting illness, the HMEP trained retired physicians as Peer Educators who then worked at the community level to inform physicians treating Medicaid patients of the benefits of hospice care. The information available in the report should assist in crafting statewide health policy that will promote hospice care for terminally ill persons and provide a greater understanding of the unique needs of the dying and their families. The 178-page report may be downloaded in PDF format or purchased for a nominal amount. See the report. ------------------------------------------------------------ Be sure to watch this e-newsletter for an announcement of the 2003 date for "Living With Grief: Coping With Public Tragedy." If you haven't done so already, please be sure to go the Site Coordinator page on our Website and take the brief Site Coordinator Survey. Your responses will help in the future planning of our programs. Thanks! ------------------------------------------------------------ Thanks again to all of you who responded to our e-newsletter survey.
