HFA's E-Newsletter - July/August 2011

Volume 11, Issue 7/8

In this issue:

Message from Amy Tucci, President and CEO

Even in this heat, things keep going at HFA! Many of you participate in our spring Living With Grief educational program, and work is already underway for that program on Ethics. But we're excited to add another program to our education offerings, and we encourage you to join us. The New Perspectives series will address the latest thinking on various topics and its application in the work of hospice and palliative care professionals. Beyond Kübler-Ross: New Perspectives in Death, Dying and Grief will explore what has been learned since Kübler-Ross published her epochal book "On Death and Dying." Our panel will examine what we know about death, dying and grief more than 40 years later, and what should be taught, understood, and practiced today.

In a chapter for our upcoming companion book, Dr. Ken Doka succinctly talks about why this matters. "Certainly Stage Models are ingrained within the popular imagination - references to them appear in television shows and movies, and they also remain prevalent in health education...How should one respond to persons, especially supervisors, still tied to older models?" He then goes on to point out that, for anyone who works with those facing the end of life, "It is an ethical mandate to work from the most current knowledge. After all would a cancer patient wish to be treated by an oncologist steeped in the approaches offered in 1969?"

Focus on: Choosing a Hospice

Over the last year, HFA has been pleased to add a number of hospice professionals to its staff. We'd like to introduce you today to Phil Carpenter, who joined HFA in April of this year. Mr. Carpenter brings a wealth of experience in caregiving and hospice. Here he shares what brought him to this work; what he has learned from his years of direct care and supervision; and what he is looking forward to in his new position at HFA. He discusses some of HFA's new programs, and why he's pleased to be a part of them: "Hospice professionals and others who work with the dying should always challenge themselves to really look at what they say, what they do-challenge themselves to think about what is offered to patients and families every day, and be open to new ideas and new possibilities that can bring both the newest information and the most compassionate presence possible."

New and Updated Offerings from HFA

Hospice Foundation of America is pleased to announce its newly updated publication, A Caregiver's Guide to the Dying Process. HFA's bereavement and medical experts have enhanced our previous publication to present information in a way that is less clinical and intimidating to those who are caring for a loved one at the end of life. In addition to the enhanced information, HFA has given the booklet a new, easy to read layout and title.

A Caregiver's Guide to the Dying Process is  now available at our online store. Individuals and families may order the Guide for $5.95 (plus shipping charges.) Bulk orders are available in packages of 50 or 100 to organizations that wish to distribute the guide among their patients and families. A box of 50 Guides is just $197.50, or save when you order 100 Guides for only $299.99.

HFA has added a webinar focusing on "Addressing Cultural Diversity in Hospice Care" to the resources on the Hospice Information Center. This program looks at how our differences, and our similarities, affect end-of-life decisions, and how hospice care can support culturally diverse patients and families.
