Hospice Foundation of America Book on Grief Wins Award

Washington, DC - October 4, 2012 - Beyond Kübler-Ross: New Perspectives on Death, Dying and Grief, has been awarded a silver medal by Living Now Book Awards in the category of Grieving/Death and Dying.

Living On Awards

Written by some of the nation’s leading grief experts, the book looks closely at the pioneering legacy of Elisabeth Kübler-Ross and discusses how professional understanding of dying and grief has progressed and developed since her pivotal work transformed attitudes about death, dying and grief. The book addresses the most current perspectives surrounding the questions of how people grieve and how professionals can best support them.

“Since the publication of Kübler-Ross’s On Death and Dying (1969), her stage theory has dominated popular thinking about the ways individuals grieve, but much research since then has dramatically changed our understanding of both the dying and grieving process,” said Kenneth J. Doka, a grief expert and one of the book’s editors. “Today we know much more. We understand that grief reactions are personal pathways and not universal stages, and that response to grief is influenced by development, culture, gender and spirituality. We also know that people transform themselves and grow as a result of grief, that many people show resilience, and that some grievers struggle enormously and need careful assessment and help.”

BKRChapter authors include Charles A. Corr; David E. Balk;  Kenneth J. Doka; Colin Murray Parkes; Louis A. Gamino; Robert A. Neimeyer; and Richard G. Tedeschi, Lawrence G. Calhoun, and Elizabeth Addington. Subjects addressed include the strengths and limitations of the stage theory, anticipatory grief and mourning, task models and the dying process, grief and cross cultural research, complicated grief and the DSM-5, and grief counseling.

The book is edited by Kenneth J. Doka, professor of gerontology for the graduate school of the College of New Rochelle and senior consultant to HFA, and Amy Tucci, HFA president and CEO.

The Living Now Book Awards are presented each year to honor books that improve lives.  Ninety four medals were awarded in 29 categories. The awards are presented by Jenkins Group of Traverse City, Michigan, a book packaging and marketing firm.
