HFA's E-Newsletter - October 2012

Volume 12, Issue 10

In this issue:

Dear E-News Subscriber:

Improving Care for Veterans Facing Illness and Death will be the subject of the Living with Grief® program in Spring 2013.

With millions of vets aging, and with more than 80 percent of all veterans dying outside VA hospitals, the significance of this educational program for civilian hospice and palliative care providers is critical. This program will focus on the aging veteran population, primarily those who served in Vietnam, Korea and World War II. Issues such as military culture, trauma and PTSD, stoicism, forgiveness, pain management and grief will be addressed in the context of serious and life-limiting illness, including interviews with veterans, clinicians, and researchers knowledgeable about the veteran population. Not only will this be a special program due to its subject, but it will also be a special program for HFA as we mark the 20th Anniversary of Living with Grief® programming. We hope you'll join us for this program, which we expect to release on April 17, 2013. Registration via HFA's website will open next week.

Focus on: Exploring End-of-Life Issues Through Theatre

For centuries, playwrights have used the theatre to explore the emotional and spiritual impact of death and dying. Hospice Foundation of America is pleased to announce a new partnership with playwright Bryan Harnetiaux that will allow local organizations to utilize theatre to foster these discussions in their own communities.

Harnetiaux has written a trilogy of plays, all sensitively exploring the challenges that families and caregivers face at the end of life. The plays --Vesta, Dusk, and Holding on ~ Letting go -- are available to hospices and other organizations to produce as educational offerings, to stimulate conversation and discussion. Hospices that have utilized this method of outreach have had very positive experiences. Gina Drummond, CEO of the Hospice of Spokane, wrote that "Our reading of Vesta created wonderful discussion among audience members. The questions and conversation following the reading were not only helpful, but also thought- provoking and informative."
