Learning Objectives


At the conclusion of this teleconference, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the nature, course, and treatment of Alzheimer's disease;
  • Discuss the grief experiences of persons in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease;
  • Describe some grief issues that confront family members during the illness and after the patient's death, noting factors that complicate grief;
  • Discuss some ethical and legal issues that might emerge during the care and treatment of Alzheimer's patients, and indicate ways in which these concerns might influence grief;
  • Discuss helping strategies that can be useful in assisting both patients and their families;
  • Discuss the role of hospice in offering end-of-life care to patients with Alzheimer's disease;
  • Describe the stressful aspects of caring for Alzheimer's patients, and suggest strategies for self-care that can be used by family caregivers, program staff, nursing home aides, and members of the hospice team.
